Survey Shows that HK Citizens Are Uncertain about the “COVID-19 Vaccine” The Liberal Party Urges the Government to Proactively Release Related Information

(Hong Kong‧30 December 2020.)The COVID-19 epidemic situation has been fluctuating and still severe. With the government’s earlier procurement of 3 different types of COVID-19 vaccines, the Liberal Party conducted a phone survey earlier this month to understand HK citizens’ view and perception /awareness towards vaccination. The results were announced at the press conference held by the Party in the afternoon on 30th December, with Felix Chung, Party Leader; Tommy Cheung, Chairman; Peter Shiu, Vice Chairman; Michael Lee, Vice Chairman; and Frankie Yick, Legco member participating.

The survey was conducted by successfully interviewing 2,691 HK citizens over the age of 18 through phone, starting from 22nd to 27th December. Nearly 90% of the respondents knew that the HK Government had purchased 3 different types of COVID-19 vaccines from the Mainland and overseas, and with a goal to provide vaccination to the citizens within 2021 – revealing that most of the citizens are aware of the introduction of the vaccine in Hong Kong. Around 60% of the interviewees planned to get vaccinated and 40% so far have no plan to do so. The Liberal Party regarded it as an indication of the public’s uncertain attitude towards vaccination, urging the government to release more information and test data about the 3 vaccines, as well as increasing publicity to ease their doubts.

Among the 1,600 respondents who indicated that they plan to get vaccinated, more than half of them knew the origins of all 3 different COVID-19 vaccines, reflecting the public's close attention and extensive knowledge of the vaccine. More than half of (51.7%) of these particular group believed that the government should legislate to compel all residents in Hong Kong to be vaccinated, and 32.1% of them opposed the legislation.

More than half (54.7%) of the respondents agree or strongly agree that the government should allow the citizens to get vaccinated with the type (of vaccine) they wish to. Among the 1,112 respondents who want to have their own choice of vaccine, about 64% of them reveal that they would pick the one researched and developed in China.

In conclusion, the Liberal Party believes that all Hong Kong citizens have to come together to fight COVID-19, hoping that the Legco members from different sectors will be able to help promote the vaccination with these survey results and encourage various sectors to be vaccinated as soon as possible. The Party looks forward to seeing zero cases in the near future, traffic between China and Hong Kong to be soon resumed and reactivating the economy for different industries to restore their businesses.
